There is a quiet window in pregnancy when everything feels suspended between who you have been and who you are about to become. Your bump is round. Your hands rest there without thinking. Your older child leans in close, curious about the sibling they have not met yet. This season will not last, and that is exactly why a Portland maternity session matters so much to the families I work with.
A maternity session is not just a few pretty photos of a baby bump. When it is done with intention, it becomes the opening chapter of your family’s story, a way to pause and notice the love and anticipation that exist right now, before everything changes again.

Pregnancy changes so quickly. The way your body holds this baby right now is different from how it looked weeks ago and different from how it will look once your little one finally arrives. Your toddler’s curiosity about your belly, the way your partner instinctively rests a hand on your bump while you talk, the anticipation on everyone’s face. None of it repeats itself.
A maternity session gives you the chance to slow down and document that feeling on purpose, rather than hoping you remember it later. Years from now, your child will be able to see how loved they already were before they ever took a breath.

I think of a maternity session as the very first page of your family’s visual story. It comes before the newborn photos, before the first birthday, before all the milestones that follow. When you choose to document this chapter, you are giving your family a complete narrative rather than a story that only begins once the baby is here.
This is part of why so many of my maternity clients go on to document their newborn’s arrival and continue with family sessions as their children grow. Each session adds another page. Together, they become a record of your family that feels cohesive, intentional, and entirely your own.

When families come to me for a maternity session, I always begin with the family as a whole. We start with connection. I guide you through simple, natural interactions together so everyone has a chance to warm up to the camera and settle into the moment.
From there, if you have little ones with you, I move through their portion of the session fairly quickly. Children have a wonderful window of patience, and I want to make the most of it before they are ready to move on to something else.
Once that part is complete, the focus shifts to celebrating you, the parents. We slow down for images of the two of you together, and then quiet, tender moments of you alone with your bump. This is your time to simply be present with the baby you are about to meet, without anyone needing to perform for the camera. Nothing about this process is rushed. I would rather we move at a pace that feels calm and connected than hurry through it just to check a box.

One of the loveliest parts of planning a Portland maternity session is choosing where it takes place. In my studio, we work against a simple white backdrop. There is something beautiful about how that simplicity removes every distraction and lets your bump, your expressions, and your connection with your family take center stage.
If you are drawn to natural light and the outdoors, Portland offers some genuinely stunning settings for this season of your life. A few of my favorites include:
Wherever we go, the goal stays the same. We are not chasing a trend. We are documenting your family exactly as you are in this moment.

I recommend scheduling your maternity session sometime between weeks 26 and 35 of pregnancy. Your bump will be beautifully rounded by then, and you will likely still feel comfortable enough to move, walk, and pose with ease.
If this is your first baby, you have a bit more flexibility to wait closer to 35 weeks. If you are expecting your second or further baby, you may want to schedule a little earlier, since many people carry a bit larger with each subsequent pregnancy.
Because I only take a limited number of sessions each month, I always recommend reaching out early in your second trimester to make sure your preferred date is still available.

To reserve your maternity session, a session fee of $300 is collected at booking. This fee covers my time and planning, along with full access to my client wardrobe, which includes more than 60 size-inclusive dresses you are welcome to borrow from for your session.
After your session, we will schedule an online viewing and ordering appointment where you will see your images, choose your favorites, and design the heirloom artwork that will bring your photographs into your home. I will guide you through every step, so the process feels just as calm as the session itself.

A maternity session is so much more than a few photos of your bump. It is the beginning of your family’s story, told with the same care and intention that will carry through every chapter that follows. If you are expecting and want to document this season before your baby arrives, I would be honored to help you create those images.
Reserve your maternity session today, and let’s tell the first chapter of your family’s story together. Get in touch to check availability and start planning your session.
When should I schedule my Portland maternity session?
I recommend scheduling between weeks 26 and 35 of pregnancy. This timing allows your bump to be fully rounded while you still feel comfortable moving and posing naturally throughout the session.
Can my partner and other children be part of the maternity session?
Yes, absolutely. While the session highlights you as the expecting parent, I love including the whole family. We begin with everyone together, move through the children’s portion of the session, and then slow down for images of just you and your partner.
Do you offer both studio and outdoor maternity sessions in Portland?
Yes. You can choose a session in my SE Portland studio against a simple white backdrop, or an outdoor session at one of my favorite Portland locations, including the International Rose Test Gardens, Rooster Rock State Park, or a quiet natural area I love in SE Portland.
What should I wear to my maternity session?
I provide a style guide along with access to my client wardrobe of more than 60 size-inclusive dresses, so you never have to stress about finding the right outfit on your own.
