Beyond the Bump: Stylish Ways to Document Your Motherhood Journey from Maternity to Baby’s First Year

Baby standing milestone photography in Portland

Motherhood changes so much, so quickly, and it can be hard to take it all in while you’re living it.

The bump that rounds out slowly, and then all at once. The first time you feel those tiny kicks beneath your hands. The way your whole world shifts the moment that baby is placed on your chest. And then the blur of months that follow, where everything changes faster than you can take it in.

You are living inside one of the most significant chapters of your life. And the quiet, aching truth is: it will not last.

This is exactly why I believe in documenting it. Not as an afterthought. Not with a quick phone photo. But intentionally, beautifully, and with enough care that these images can become the artwork your future self reaches for.

I am Ashlie, a Portland, Oregon photographer specializing in maternity, newborn, and baby milestone photography. Over the years, I have had the privilege of walking alongside families through this entire arc of motherhood, from those glowing pregnancy weeks all the way through baby’s first birthday. What I know to be true is this: when the seasons are documented with intention, they become something you carry with you forever.

Let me walk you through how that can look for your family.

Why the Full Journey Deserves to Be Documented

Motherhood does not arrive in one single moment. It builds. It unfolds over weeks and months in ways that feel both ordinary and profound at the same time.

When families choose to document their journey from maternity through baby’s first year, something extraordinary happens. The photographs tell a story. They show who you were before this baby arrived. They show the way your arms learned to hold a newborn. They show the moment your baby learned to sit up, to laugh, to eat cake for the very first time.

These are not just photographs. They are the beginning of your family’s legacy.

The Maternity Session: Celebrating Who You Are Right Now

Maternity photography session in Portland Oregon

There is a window during pregnancy when everything feels suspended between who you have been and who you are about to become. Your bump is round. Your hands rest on it without even thinking. And somewhere beneath the excitement, there is a quiet awareness: this season will not last.

A Portland maternity photo session gives you the space to slow down and actually be present in it.

I photograph maternity sessions both in my Portland studio and outdoors at some of my favorite locations around the city. The studio setting is calm and beautifully lit, and every detail is thoughtfully designed so you can focus on what matters most: feeling beautiful, feeling celebrated, and soaking up this season with the people you love most.

For families, I always begin with everyone together. Those interactive, connected moments where you are all moving and laughing and reaching for each other create some of the most genuine images of the entire session. If there are older children, we focus on them early while they are still fresh and happy. Then we transition into quieter, more intimate moments for you and your partner, and finally into some solo portraits that are fully and completely about you, the mama-to-be.

Some of the most meaningful things we document during a maternity session:

  • The fullness of your bump in a beautifully styled gown or dress from my curated wardrobe
  • The way your partner reaches for you without thinking
  • A toddler pressing their cheek against your belly, completely unaware of how precious that moment is
  • Solo portraits of you, glowing and unhurried and fully in this
  • The tender, quiet in-between moments that feel too fleeting to hold

For outdoor sessions, a few of my favorite locations in Portland include the International Rose Test Garden, Rooster Rock State Park, and a favorite natural area of mine in SE Portland that I keep close to heart. Each one offers a different kind of light and landscape, and I will guide you through choosing what feels most like you.

I recommend reserving your maternity session between weeks 28 and 35 of your pregnancy. This is when your bump is beautifully round and you are still feeling comfortable and mobile. I only take a limited number of sessions each month, so I encourage you to reach out early in your second trimester to secure your date.

The Newborn Session: The Tender First Days

Then the baby arrives.

And everything you thought you knew about yourself quietly reorganizes around this tiny, impossibly perfect person.

The newborn season is one of the most fleeting things I have ever witnessed. The way they curl into you. The weight of them sleeping on your chest. The way their features seem to change almost daily. You are exhausted and overwhelmed and completely in love, all at the same time.

This is worth preserving. And I want to help you do it beautifully.

My newborn sessions take place entirely in my home studio in SE Portland, near the Woodstock neighborhood. The studio is warm and peaceful and designed to feel like a sanctuary for your family during those tender first weeks. Everything is calm and unhurried. We go at baby’s pace. We never rush.

The whole family is always included. For sessions with older siblings, I follow an approach that puts everyone at ease. We start with family photos, getting the older kids warmed up and engaged with connection and movement, not forced poses. Then we move through the children’s portion while their energy is still high. After that, we transition into the quieter parent and baby moments that allow us to create the most tender, connected portraits of all.

My studio is intentionally simple and clean, with a white backdrop that keeps the focus on your baby and your family. No elaborate props or elaborate setups. Just you and your baby, beautifully documented in a way that feels completely natural, like a moment you would actually find yourselves in.

Here is what a newborn session with me looks like:

  • A warm, guided studio experience where you can relax completely
  • Natural, authentic poses that reflect how babies actually rest and move
  • Full family portraits including siblings and both parents
  • Intimate close-up portraits of all those tiny, fleeting details
  • A calm, patient pace that follows your baby’s lead from beginning to end

I am certified in newborn safety through APNPI, trained in infant and child CPR, and fully vaccinated. Your baby’s safety and comfort are always the absolute first priority.

I recommend reaching out during your second trimester to reserve your due date. Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first seven to fourteen days after birth, when babies are naturally the sleepiest and most content.

The Milestone Sessions: Watching Your Baby Become Themselves

And then they grow.

Before you even realize it is happening, your newborn is holding their head up. Then sitting. Then pulling themselves to standing. Then taking those wobbly first steps across the room toward your outstretched arms.

Baby milestone sessions are how we document those chapters, too. The moments where your baby is visibly becoming someone. Where their personality is starting to show up in their expressions and their movements and the way they look at you.

These sessions are photographed in my studio as well. Simple, clean, and entirely focused on your baby and who they are in this exact moment.

A few milestone sessions that families love:

Sitter Session

This is typically around six months, when baby is sitting up on their own and filled with the most wonderful expressions. They are delighted by everything and have not yet figured out how to crawl away from you. It is a beautiful, laughing, joyful session.

Standing or Walker Session

Somewhere around nine to twelve months, babies discover what their legs are for, and the whole world opens up to them. This session documents that fun in-between stage as their personality really starts to shine.

First Birthday Session

The one-year session is its own celebration entirely. We photograph your baby and can incorporate a cake for those fun, messy first-birthday moments. It is messy and joyful and one of the most memorable sessions I photograph all year.

Many of my families choose a first-year membership, which allows us to document each of these stages cohesively so the images feel like chapters in the same beautiful story. If that sounds like something you are interested in, I would love to tell you more about it. Just reach out and ask.

What Makes This Kind of Documentation Meaningful

There is a version of documenting your child’s first year that lives entirely on your phone. The blurry video you took while trying to hold them at the same time. The photo that was almost perfect, but the lighting was off. The moments you meant to preserve but cannot quite find anymore.

And then there is the kind that lives on your walls. In an heirloom album on your coffee table. In a framed portrait above your couch that your child will one day stop and look at and feel.

That is what I create.

After every session, you will view your images through an online reveal and ordering appointment. I will guide you through designing custom framed artwork and heirloom albums that are built specifically for your home and your family’s story. Your finished pieces are delivered with care and designed to become part of your home for years to come.

Because one day your home will be quieter. Your children will be taller than you expected. And you will reach for that album on the shelf and remember.

This is what we are creating together. Not content. Legacy.

How to Plan Your Motherhood Documentation Journey

Motherhood journey photography from maternity to first birthday

If you are expecting and thinking about documenting this entire season, here is how I recommend approaching it:

During your second trimester, reach out to start planning your maternity and newborn sessions. My calendar fills quickly, and planning ahead ensures you will not miss the window you want.

Between weeks 28 and 35, we will photograph your maternity session, either in the studio or outdoors at one of my favorite Portland locations.

Within the first two weeks after birth, we will create your newborn portraits in my SE Portland studio. This is the sleepiest, most peaceful window and creates some of the most breathtaking images.

Throughout baby’s first year, we will document each milestone chapter at the moments that feel most meaningful to your family.

Every session is planned with care. Every detail is considered. And from start to finish, my goal is to make the entire experience feel effortless, calm, and entirely worthy of the love that is already filling your home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Documenting the Maternity to First-Year Journey

How far in advance should I reach out to reserve a maternity session?

I recommend reaching out early in your second trimester. I take a limited number of sessions each month, and maternity dates fill quickly, especially during the spring and fall. Reaching out early gives us the most flexibility in finding a date that works beautifully for your family.

Can I reserve my newborn session before my baby arrives?

Absolutely, and this is actually exactly how I recommend doing it. After you reserve your session, we will put a tentative date on the calendar for approximately two weeks after your due date. Once baby arrives, we will confirm the exact date based on how you are both feeling. This gives us flexibility to plan your newborn session around your baby’s actual arrival.

Do you offer maternity and newborn sessions together as a package?

I do offer a first-year membership option that allows families to document the full journey from maternity through baby’s first year in a cohesive way. Please reach out directly and I will be happy to share the details with you.

Do you provide wardrobe for maternity and newborn sessions?

I have a curated client wardrobe with over 60 size-inclusive dresses available to borrow for your session. During our planning process, I will send you a style board with outfit inspiration so that everyone in your family looks and feels their best on session day. My goal is to remove the guesswork completely so you can arrive and simply enjoy the experience.

What is the difference between a studio and an outdoor maternity session?

A studio session offers a timeless, clean, and controlled setting that is beautiful in every season. An outdoor session at one of Portland’s most scenic locations, such as the International Rose Test Garden, Rooster Rock State Park, or a favorite natural area of mine in SE Portland, brings in natural light and landscape in a way that feels more expansive and environmental. During our planning process, we will talk through which option feels most like you.

Where do you photograph newborn sessions?

All newborn sessions take place in my home studio in SE Portland, Oregon, near the Woodstock neighborhood. The studio is warm, peaceful, and designed to keep your baby safe and comfortable throughout the entire session.

How should I prepare for a newborn session with older siblings?

I love having older siblings at newborn sessions. I always begin with family portraits so the big kids can get warmed up and engaged before they lose steam. Then we move through the sibling portion of the session while everyone is still having fun. After that, we transition into quieter parent and baby portraits. Older kids are always welcome to take a break at the park nearby once their part of the session is complete.

What happens after my session?

About three weeks after your session, we will schedule an online reveal and ordering appointment where you will view your images from the comfort of your own home. You will have time to select your favorites and choose the artwork pieces you want to display. I guide you through the entire process of designing heirloom albums and custom-framed wall art that is built specifically for your space.
