There’s something truly special about fall in Portland. The golden light, cozy textures, and crisp air make it a beautiful season for family photos. Whether we’re strolling through colorful trees or snuggled up on a blanket in a quiet field, fall has a way of bringing out those warm, connected moments that I love to document.
One of the most common questions I hear this time of year is: What should we wear? And I get it – styling a whole family for photos can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. With just a few thoughtful choices, you can pull together outfits that feel natural, timeless, and totally you.
Fall doesn’t have to mean bright oranges and heavy plaids. Instead, think warm, muted tones, like rust, camel, olive, mustard, cream, soft brown, or dusty rose. These shades reflect the season beautifully without overpowering the scene.
Start with one outfit you love, maybe a flowy dress for mom or a sweet knit romper for your toddler. Then build the rest of the family’s outfits around that piece using complementary colors and textures.
Fall weather can shift quickly, so layers are your best friend. Think cardigans, vests,, scarves, or cozy wraps. Not only do they add visual interest, but they also allow you to adjust easily for comfort as we move through the session.
Blending different fabrics, like chunky knits, linen, corduroy, and soft cotton, adds subtle variety without needing bold patterns. Textures bring warmth and richness to your Family photos, especially in that dreamy golden-hour light.
Stick to solids or simple patterns like small florals or delicate stripes. Logos and bold graphics tend to draw attention away from what really matters, which is your connection and those beautiful in-between moments.
The cozier your little ones feel, the more relaxed they’ll be in front of the camera. Choose well-fitting clothes that allow movement, and bring a favorite sweater or blanket if they need a little comfort boost.
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same color shirt. Instead, aim for coordination, a shared palette that feels cohesive but not identical. It keeps your images looking modern and natural.
A cozy, neutral-toned throw blanket can double as a prop and a comfort item. Whether we’re sitting on the ground or wrapping up at the end of the session, it adds a soft, intimate element to your images.
We’ll likely be walking through grass, fields, or wooded trails—so choose shoes that are both cute and practical. Think boots, or closed-toe flats. Barefoot is always an adorable option for little ones if the weather allows!
Please stick with light, neutral tones for footwear. Brown is always preferred over black, and kindly avoid sneakers or anything with neon colors.
