When should We Schedule Our Maternity Photos? | Portland, OR

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “when should we schedule our maternity photos?”

Typically, I recommend scheduling your maternity photos between weeks 26-35 of pregnancy. Every person carries their baby a bit differently. But, we really want you to have a nice round belly bump at the time of your session.

Depending on how your pregnancy is going and how you are carrying your baby scheduling your maternity photos for sometime between 26-35 weeks will be great.

Typically, if it’s your first baby you can wait a little bit longer and go more towards 35 weeks, and if it’s your second+ baby you could probably schedule them for a bit sooner. Most people tend to carry a bit larger after a first pregnancy.

When should we reach out to schedule?

I always tell people to reach out early in their 2nd trimester. I have limited availability and can only take on a few sessions each month, so the sooner you reach out – the better!

What are the next steps?

Once you get in touch and know that we’ll be a good fit – we’ll start planning your session.

I’ll send you a little welcome box full of goodies and a guide to help you start preparing for your session!

We’ll schedule a pre-session planning call to chat about outfits for the entire family. You can borrow from my client wardrobe which has over 60 dresses to choose from. I also have outfits for babies sized 0-18 months for you to borrow as well.

You can decide if you’d like to do your maternity photos outdoors at my favorite location or we can do your session at my home studio. It’s up to you.

Then it’s time to schedule hair & make-up. I’ll send you the contact information for the artist that I work with and you can schedule them to help you get some special pampering on the day of your session!

What does the Maternity session look like?

While maternity sessions have a special focus on the pregnant person, I do love to photograph the entire family at a maternity session as well. So, yes – please bring the family to participate in the session. It’s a special time in all of your lives as you prepare to meet your new baby. I love watching older siblings interact with Mama’s baby bump. As well as the joy between both parents as they reflect on what’s to come! Maternity sessions typically last about an hour and you can usually expect to see about 40-50 images from your session. You can see some maternity photos here or scroll to the bottom to see a recent session at my favorite photo location!

After the session!

About two weeks after your session, we will get together over zoom to view your images together, select your favorites, and design your artwork. While all of my clients walk away with some of the digital images we also work together to design heirloom artwork so that you can always cherish these memories in a physical form. Whether it’s a beautiful album for your coffee table or a few fine art framed pieces for your wall. Together, we’ll make sure you can always enjoy your images for many years to come and that they don’t get forgotten about on outdated technology.
