While the outdoor temps are still hot, don’t be fooled – Fall is just around the corner. “What to wear for fall family photos?” will be a common question I’ll be hearing from clients. And do I have suggestions!
If you are the one reading this, then you are likely the point person for organizing Fall family photos. Congrats! Your bonus for being the organizer is getting to pick out what you are wearing first, and then coordinate the family around you. Find something you LOVE and then plan the rest of your family’s outfits around that! Remember, I have a feminine wardrobe you can borrow from as well!
Are you doing a studio or outdoor session? All of my outdoor sessions take place at my favorite natural area, which photographs beautifully year round. The Fall colors don’t disappoint! Keep in mind you don’t want to blend in with your location, but you don’t want to clash with the background either.
Speaking of colors, I recommend light-colored neutrals, or jewel tones. Choosing these types of colors will give your images a timeless feel to them. Bright, bold colors can be distracting and date images more quickly.
You don’t want everyone to be wearing the same thing. Instead create visual interest by creating a coordinated look. This visually breaks up colors and shades . Think about creating a color palette with your outfits. Having different hues and textures helps elevate your photos. The more you can mix it up the better!
As the weather gets cooler, think about utilizing long cardigans, textured scarves & chunky sweaters to add some extra dimension to your images and keep everyone warm on those chilly fall evenings. I love a long cardigan with a beautiful flowy dress or a thick neutral knit scarf that you can wear like a shawl. And you can never go wrong with a chunky cream sweater paired with khakis.
We all know that fashion goes through interesting trends. Trendy pieces can make a photo cringeworthy 20 years from now. Select outfits that will stand the test of time.
My goal is to make planning for your fall family session as stress-free as possible. Before your photo session I will send you some vision boards with links to purchase items. I encourage you to send me photos of all of your outfits before our session.
If you are interested in borrowing from my client wardrobe, let me know and we can hop on a quick video call for a virtual viewing.
