How to Prepare Kids for a Photo Session

Family Photography

Photographing kids is one of my greatest joys. They bring so much personality, energy, and honesty to every session. But as a parent, you might still feel a little nervous about how your children will “behave” during photos. Will they cooperate? Will they get bored? Will they roll their eyes at having their picture taken?

Take a deep breath. Those worries are completely normal. The good news is, kids don’t need to be perfect. In fact, the best images often come when they’re simply being themselves. My job is to create a relaxed environment where play, laughter, and natural connection lead the way.

Tips to Prepare Your Kids for a Fun, Stress-Free Photo Session

Talk About the Session Ahead of Time

Older kids appreciate knowing why something is happening. A few days before your session, explain in positive, straightforward terms what we’ll be doing:

“We’ll meet a photographer who will take pictures of us having fun together as a family.”

You can even involve them by showing them a few sample photos so they know what to expect. When kids feel included, they’re more likely to show up with a good attitude.

Choose Comfortable, Kid-Friendly Clothing

Clothing makes a big difference in how confident kids feel. Choose outfits that they like and feel comfortable in, while still coordinating with the family’s look. If your child feels good in their clothes, they’ll be more relaxed in front of the camera.

Think soft fabrics, well-fitting shoes, and layers that add variety without fuss. We’ll keep the styling simple and timeless so their personality shines through.

Plan Around Their Energy Levels

With older kids, naps aren’t a concern, but energy levels still matter. Some kids are at their best in the morning, while others come alive later in the day. We’ll pick a time that suits your family’s schedule the best.

The goal is to make sure they’re not rushed, overtired, or pulled straight from another activity. Giving them space to transition into the session makes all the difference.

Bring Small Comforts or Rewards

It never hurts to have a little incentive in your back pocket. Pack a favorite snack, a water bottle, or promise a fun activity after the session (like ice cream or a movie night). Kids love knowing there’s something to look forward to.

For younger school-age kids, bringing along a favorite small toy or book can also help them feel more at ease.

Set Realistic Expectations

Older kids sometimes feel pressure to “pose” or “smile the right way.” Let them know that I’m not looking for perfection; I’m looking for real moments.

Encourage them to relax, play, and just be themselves. The way they laugh at a silly joke, the way they lean into you for a hug, the way siblings tease each other, those honest moments tell your story far better than stiff smiles ever could.

Trust the Process

You don’t need to coach your kids during the session; that’s my job. With years of experience photographing children of all ages, I know how to draw out genuine smiles, turn shyness into comfort, and channel all that kid energy into joyful connection.

Your role is simply to show up, stay positive, and enjoy your family. When kids see you having fun, they’ll follow your lead.
