Top 5 Columbia Gorge Family Portrait Locations

Family Portrait

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most breathtaking places in the Pacific Northwest, and one of my favorite regions to family portrait. From dramatic cliffs to golden meadows, this area offers a stunning variety of landscapes that feel both expansive and deeply intimate. It’s the perfect place to slow down, soak in the natural beauty, and create timeless family portrait you’ll treasure for years.

If you’re considering a Columbia Gorge family session, here are five of my favorite family portrait locations to explore together:

Table of Contents

  • Rooster Rock State Park
  • Rowena Crest
  • Hamilton Island
  • Latourell Falls
  • Mosier Plateau
  • Let’s Document your family portrait in the Gorge

1. Rooster Rock State Park

Portland Family Portrait

Rooster Rock is one of the most accessible yet underrated gems in the Gorge for family Portrait. Just 30 minutes from Portland, it offers open fields, mountain views, and access to the Columbia River, all in one spot. In the spring and early summer, the landscape is lush and green, while late summer brings warm, golden tones that photograph beautifully.

This location has space to breathe, which makes it great for little ones to explore. Whether we’re capturing cuddles by the riverbank or running barefoot through the grass, Rooster Rock always delivers a peaceful, light-filled session.

2. Rowena Crest

Rowena Crest Family Session

Rowena Crest is simply iconic. Perched high above the Columbia River, this lookout offers sweeping views that feel straight out of a dream. In early spring, the hillside comes alive with wildflowers, particularly the vibrant yellow balsamroot that blankets the fields.

The wildflowers are in bloom here for a short amount of time at the end of April, early May. But the location is amazing all year long. The views can’t be beat.

There’s something so grounding and awe-inspiring about this location for family Portrait. It’s ideal for families who love nature, want a bit of adventure, and don’t mind the wind playing with their hair. Sessions here often feel epic and tender all at once.

3. Hamilton Island

Family Session in Hamilton Island

Located near Beacon Rock, Hamilton Island has become one of my favorite hidden gems in the Gorge. A mix of open meadows, river access, and towering views, it offers both variety and quiet.

I love this location for the feeling of calm it brings. We can walk slow, let the kids explore, and take our time finding those sweet, unscripted moments that feel the most like you. At sunset, the light here is soft and golden, perfect for capturing warm, genuine family portrait.

In mid-June, early July there are stunning purple & pink wild pea flowers in bloom everywhere while in August everything turns golden and the Queen Anne’s lace flowers start popping out. It’s truly beautiful year-round.

4. Latourell Falls

If your family loves a touch of drama and a little splash of adventure, Latourell Falls might be the perfect backdrop. Located just off the Historic Columbia River Highway, this waterfall is easy to access but feels like a hidden forest sanctuary.

We’ll often start near the stone bridge and then wander closer to the falls, depending on your comfort level. The lush greenery, moss-covered cliffs, and gentle mist all add a beautiful, moody texture to your images, without the need to hike miles into the woods.

5. Mosier Plateau

Tucked between Hood River and The Dalles, Mosier Plateau is a lesser-known trail that winds through wildflower fields and offers stunning views of the Gorge. In spring, it bursts with color, and in late summer, the landscape turns golden and warm.

It’s a perfect mix of beauty and quiet, away from the crowds and full of that soft, glowy light I love. Families who choose this spot often mention how peaceful it feels, and the resulting images always carry that same stillness.

Let’s Document your family portrait in the Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is more than just a beautiful backdrop. It’s a space that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and connect with your loved ones. Whether you’re chasing wildflowers, watching the wind move through tall grass, or just holding your little ones close as the sun sets behind you, these moments deserve to be remembered.
