Choosing Color Schemes for Spring Family Photos

Let’s chat about color schemes for spring family photos. If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of light, neutral tones and colors for family portraits. Today I’m covering color schemes, from all neutrals to pastels to palettes with a pop of color. I’ll help you find a gorgeous and timeless color scheme for your spring family photos.

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year for family photos. The weather is mild, the flowers are blooming, and everything seems fresh and new. With so many colors to choose from, it can be challenging to decide what color scheme to use for your family photos. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect color scheme for your spring family photos.

Remember, when we work together we will hop on a 20 minute pre-session planning zoom call to go over vision boards and outfits for the entire family. So, you don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here to help! This post will get you thinking about what you might want for your family.

Here are my top 7 tips for choosing color schemes for spring family photos:

1. Start with a Neutral Base

A neutral base is the foundation of any color scheme. It can be white, ivory, beige, or gray. A neutral base will allow your family’s clothing to stand out, while also providing a cohesive look to your photos. Neutral colors are timeless and will never go out of style.

2. Consider Your Location

When choosing a color scheme, consider the location of your session. If you are taking photos in a garden with a lot of spring flowers, you may want to choose colors that complement the natural setting. For example, muted shades of green, blue, and pink can work well with a springtime garden.

3. Think about Your Family’s Skin Tone

Another factor to consider when choosing a color scheme is your family’s skin tone. Colors that complement your skin tone will make you look radiant and healthy in your photos. For example, if you have warm undertones in your skin, colors like peach, coral, and gold will look great on you. If you have cool undertones, colors like blue, purple, and silver will be more flattering.

4. Use Complementary Colors

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. Using complementary colors in your color scheme can create a bold and eye-catching look. For example, yellow and purple, blue and orange, or red and green are all complementary colors. When using complementary colors, it’s essential to balance them out so that they don’t overpower each other. When considering these types of colors, always opt for lighter, muted tones which photograph better than bright, bold colors.

5. Consider Pastels

Spring is often associated with pastel colors, which are light, soft, and muted. Pastels can work well for family photos, as they create a soft and dreamy look. Muted shades of pink, lilac, baby blue, and mint green are all popular pastel colors for spring family photos. Pastels are also versatile and can be combined with other colors to create a unique color scheme.

6. Keep it Simple

Finally, when choosing a color scheme, it’s important to keep it simple. Using too many colors can create a chaotic and cluttered look. Stick to a few colors and use different shades and tones to create depth and variety. Remember, the focus of your family photos should be your family, not your clothing.

In conclusion, choosing a color scheme for your spring family photos can be challenging, but with these tips, you’ll be able to create a cohesive and visually appealing look. Start with a neutral base, consider your location and skin tone, use complementary colors, consider pastels, and keep it simple. With these tips, your family photos will be beautiful and timeless.
